The LAANSW State Track & Field Championships were held over the weekend and Kiama's team of twelve athletes had a very successful meet. Over the course of the weekend, our athletes contested 24 individual events plus the Junior Girls relay. The team returned with some fantastic results including three medals, a number of "top 10" placings and several personal best performances. Club coach, Don Hodgekiss, was named "LAANSW Coach of the Year"  and senior athlete, Talissa Scott, was selected in the LAANSW Team to compete at the Australian Little Athletics Championships in Melbourne during April.

Our two medal winners were Ella Harris (U/9) who won GOLD in the 800m  and Talissa Scott (U/15) who won BRONZE in both the Long Jump & Triple Jump. Both girls produced personal bests to win their medals.

Congratulations got to all twelve athletes who competed with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the weekend. A more detailed report will appear here shortly. Pics from the State Championships can be found in the photo gallery.

Presentation Night:
31-03-2008
The 2007-08 Track & Field season Presentation was held last Friday evening at the Kiama Leisure Centre fields with over 200 athletes, parents & family in attendance. Despite early threats of a thunderstorm, it was an excellent evening and a fitting way to celebrate the end of a very successful season of Track & Field competition.

The major award winners on the night were, Larni Cowgill, Maguire Page, Courtney Moon and Aron Cox.

Larni (U/11) was the winner of the "Dean Blair Memorial Trophy" for overall pointscore, with Maguire (U/6) second and Courtney (U/15) third. Aron Cox (U/8) was the recipent of the "Coaches Award" for most improved athlete.

The "

A big thank you goes out to all of the parent volunteers who helped make this season such a success. The Committee recognises the fact that without you, our club could not function. We trust that you and your children enjoyed the season and hope to see you back again in September 2008.

2007-08 Pointscore Winners:
31-03-2008
Promising young U/11 athlete, Larni Cowgill, was named Kiama Little Athletics "Dean Blair Memorial Trophy" winner last Friday as the leading point scorer in the club for the 2007-08 season.

In 2007-08, Larni was a Zone, Regional & State Representitive, won one GOLD, two SILVER and a BRONZE Medal at Zone, a GOLD and SILVER medal at Regional and broke her High Jump personal best in coming 4th at State.

Larni's win means she will now wear the coveted
#1 registration patch for the 2008-09 season of Little Athletics.

Larni snares the "Blair":
31-03-2008

During that time she has been a three time wiunner of the Dean Blair Trophy, a Zone Rep, Regional Rep, State Rep, LAANSW State Team rep and multiple medal winner in State Level competition.

In recent times Talissa has proven to be a champion in her favorite events, the Hurdles & Jumps. Sweeping all before her at Zone and Regional level, Talissa finished with a pair of  Bronze medals at the 2008 State Championships in the Long Jump & Triple Jump. He greatest acheivement though has to be her back to back wins in the 2007 & 2008 State Multi Events. The latter of those two wins has seen her win selection in the LAANSW Team to contest the National Championships in April 2008. Talissa has competed many times in the Mid South Coast Grand Prix and represented Kiama with distinction at many a local carnival. An all rounder, Talissa broke in excess of 20 records in her four seasons with the club in events ranging from the 100m to Shot Put. This season she went out in style, breaking three records on the final night of competiton. Talissa is a dedicated athlete and was dual registered in 2007-08 with the Illawarra Blue Stars senior club for whom she competes in ANSW competitions. Talissa has also represented her school, Kiama High, at District, Regional, State and National level, winning many medals along the way. Talissa's talent was identified by the NSW Institute of Sport who invited her to join their elite Emerging Athlete Program.

By contrast, Courtney's involvement with Kiama has been short and sweet. Courtney first joined Kiama Little Athletics as an U/13 back in 2005.  She was a Zone and Regional Rep in her first season and added State Rep to that list of achievements this season. Courtney showed enormous improvement in her chosen events, middle distance, during this season and capped off a terrific year with two personal best performances at State in March.

Like Courtney, Ellara only recently joined the Kiama club. Whilst Ellara chose not to compete at Zone Championships, she showed quite a bit of promise in the middle distance events. Ellara had a red hot go at every event on the program and recorded a number of personal best performances during her two years with the club.

On behalf of all at the Kiama Centre, we would like congratulate the girls and wish Talissa, Courtney  and Ellara all the best for the future.
Farewell to our U/15's. Or is it?:
31-03-2008
Normally at this time of year we bid farewell to our U/15 athletes, but with the possible inclusion of an U/16-17 age group next season, we just may see them go around again next season!!

This season we had three U/15's, Talissa Scott, Courtney Moon and Ellara Rainnie. The girls have a combined total of 17 years in Little Athletics between them. and  have proven to be outstanding role models for the younger athletes in our club, with Talissa and Courtney both representing the club at Zone, Regional and State along the way.

Talissa started Little Athletics way back in 1996 as a Tiny Tot and has continued right through till the U/15's,  joining Kiama from her previous club in 2004.
Talissa Scott and Courtney Moon carry the KLAC banner during the "Show of Colours" at the recent State Championships in Sydney.
The 29th AGM of Kiama Little Athletics was held on Friday 4th April and saw several changes to the Committee voted in for the 2008-09 season. Some existing Committee members did not stand for their positions again, and several new people put up their hands to take their place.

Kiama has come along in leaps and bounds in recent times and Committee members from the past few seasons should be justifably proud of their acheivemnets as the club is in great shape both on and off the track. In the past year we have seen Kiama retain our accreditation from the Australian Drug Foundation in their "Good Sports" program and win a GOLD level award for volunteer management from LAANSW.  With a record number of athletes joining the club last season, the incoming Committee will be charged with the task of continuing the fantastic growth of the club in the coming season.

One major change has seen Craig Scott step aside as President. Craig has been a major driving force behind the resurgance of KLAC in recent years and must be congratulated for his efforts. Beth Moon moves into the role of President and is sure to continue the good work of her predecessor.

Rep honours for Talissa:
22-04-2008
Rising star, Talissa Scott, will jet off to Melbourne this week to represent LAANSW at the ALA National Championships.

Talissa will contest the Australian Teams & Multi Event Championship on Saturday, an event that NSW has won a number of times in the past.

Talissa won selection in the team on the back of her victory at the NSW State Multi Championships during March. Whilst she showed a clean pair of heels to her rivals out at Orange, Talissa knows she will need to be on top of her game to finish amongst the medals in Melbourne. The packed event program will see Talissa contesting five individual events in 5 hours plus a combined male & female 4x100m relay.

Good luck Talissa. Go for Gold!!!

National SILVER for Talissa:
05-05-2008
Young gun Talissa Scott has won SILVER at the ALA National Championships in Melbourne last week.

Representing LAANSW, Talissa contested the Multi Event and performed very strongly, setting new personal bests in both the 800m run and Discus.

The secret of Talissa's success was her consistancy across all five of her events. Talissa scored a total of 3448 points, coming 3rd in both the Long Jump & 800m, 4th in the Hurdles & Discus and 6th in the 100m. Talissa also combined with her LAANSW team mates to finish 2nd in the 4x100m Relay and 2nd in the Life Members Trophy competition for overall pointscore.

A SILVER medal at Nationals is a fitting reward for this talented & dedicated teenager. Congratulations Talissa, you've done your Centre proud.

Three Kiama athletes travelled out to Lithgow for the LAANSW State Cross Country & Road Walks last weekend. Ella Harris (U/9) and Audrey Pring (U/10) contested the Cross Country events, whilst clubmate Sarah Broadhead (U/13) competed in the Road Walk. Conditions for the Cross Country in particular were some of the most difficult seen at Little A's events for many years with athletes not only having to contend with the steep terrain, but freezing temperatures as well!!

Competing at her first Cross Country, Ella put in a fantastic performance to take SILVER on the testing 1500m course. An athlete with great potential, Ella capped off an outstanding Little Athletics season which saw her win medals in Zone, Regional and State Track & Field competition as well as at the Cross Country.

Also competing at her first Cross Country, Audrey ran strongly to finish a comendable 14th place in her 1500m race. Clocking a time just outside of her personal best over the distance, Audrey was very pleased with her efforts amongst a quality field.

Race Walker, Sarah, was competing in her first Little A's event of the season after a long lay off with injury. A medalist at this event last year, Sarah started out hot on the heels of the leaders but evntually finished a little off the pace in 6th place. Like Audrey, Sarah's time was just outside her best for the distance, but still a very good effort considering her limited preperation.

All three athletes were great ambassadors for the Kiama club and showed great determination and sportsmanship on the day. Congratulations girls!!
